Former President Donald Trump claims that if the election results were reversed, the Democratic Party would have launched a “revolution.”
The former president repeated his frequently invoked claims of a fraudulent election during a podcast with Fox News contributor Lisa Boothe, which was released on Monday. At one point during their conversation, Trump said, “If the tables were turned,” they would “have literally had a revolution.”

Since November, Trump and those in his orbit questioned both the integrity of the vote and the constitutionality of some voting laws that were changed before the election. They subsequently filed dozens of lawsuits seeking to overturn the election, which were nearly unanimously thrown out. Trump went as far as to publicly urge then-Vice President Mike Pence not to accept certain state’s Electoral College votes even though Pence said he didn’t have the power to do so.
“It’s too bad that Mike Pence didn’t go back because I think you would’ve had a much different result had Mike Pence gone, he could’ve said, ‘I’m sorry, but this was not approved by the state legislature, and according to the constitution, it has to be,” Trump said on the podcast.
Throughout the interview, Boothe and the former president failed to bring up the events of Jan. 6, when hundreds of his supporters storm the Capitol as Congress certified the election results for President Biden. Shortly before the riot, Trump urged his supporters to go to Washington, D.C., and the Capitol but did not call for violence.
The events ultimately culminated in Trump’s second impeachment in the House of Representatives, and subsequent Senate acquittal, making him the first president to be impeached twice. The second senate acquittal vote included seven Republicans voting to convict the former commander-in-chief.
“If you look at what happened in the election, Mitch McConnell should’ve fought,” Trump said. “You know, he did nothing. He should’ve fought. They should’ve fought. That could never have, that could never have happened to a Democrat. What happened to us with the presidential election could never have happened to the Democrats. You would have had a revolution if the tables were turned, you would have literally had a revolution. And guys like Mitch McConnell, they don’t fight.”
Trump touted Boothe’s new podcast on Monday morning in a press release from his office, adding that Boothe “has been doing an outstanding job at Fox News” and encouraging others to listen to the interview.
In the podcast, Trump brought up his criticism of the court system, and the Supreme Court in particular, which ruled against dozens of lawsuits filed by him, his campaign, and adjacent groups. The pair also discussed election reform, which has become a hot-button issue since the election.
Many Republicans have argued that the only way to restore confidence in election integrity is to impose stricter laws to prevent fraud. Conversely, Democrats argue that this is a ploy akin to voter suppression because the GOP lost the presidency and traditionally red states like Georgia and Arizona. Democrats are also pushing for their own version of election reform, which includes no-excuse absentee voting and automatic registration.
The push for voting reform is happening at both the state and federal levels and will likely be a major issue in how the midterm elections are conducted.
