VRE ridership tops 20,000 for first time

Virginia Railway Express broke its ridership record on Wednesday, providing 20,133 passenger trips.

It was the first time the agency hit the 20,000 ridership mark, double the amount it had in 2000.

The spike reflects an overall increase in popularity for the commuter train service. Ridership has been 7.5 percent higher than the same period last year, according to VRE.

But all those riders means not enough seats to go around. One train averages 300 people standing without a seat, according to spokesman Mark Roeber.

The agency has been considering various ways of freeing up space, including banning space-hogging bicycles and even discouraging riders from actually boarding.
