Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a “stay-at-home” order for all people living in the state as they continue to struggle with the spread of the coronavirus.
The order will allow essential businesses such as pharmacies and grocery stores to continue operating, but nonessential businesses will have to close.
Newsom said he is “confident” that Californians will follow the new order, which is meant to “bend the curve.”

Newsom predicted Thursday that 56% of California would contract the coronavirus within the next eight weeks. So far, nearly 1,000 Californians have confirmed cases of the virus and 18 have died, according to Johns Hopkins University.
Several cities in California had already instituted shelter-in-place orders, including the San Francisco Bay Area.
