Middle schoolers taught about trans hormone therapy without parents knowing

A New Jersey middle school is facing criticism after students watched a video about a transgender man receiving hormone treatment without their parents’ knowledge.

The video, Ten Years on Testosterone, was shown to students in a social studies class at Pearl R. Miller Middle School in Kinnelon, New Jersey, according to a report.

It tells the story of LGBT activist Aydian Dowling, a biological woman who identifies as a man, and Dowling’s transition.

School officials did not make parents of students aware of the lesson plan prior to instruction, according to the report.

“You can build up the courage to stand up for yourself in a way that this is what you want to do with your life,” Dowling said, according to the video.

The LGBT activist later came to Pearl R. Miller Middle School and spoke at an assembly as part of the “Stories Of Adversity & Resilience Program,” the report noted.

Parents were informed beforehand that Dowling was coming to speak, and they were given the opportunity to opt their children out, according to the report.

Many parents protested that they should have been given the same option for the hormone therapy video.

“I felt as if I was blindsided,” Loren Malfitano, a mother of two students, said. “They’re learning about this ideology of gender before they even have classes on the actual biologies of males and females.”
