Apple Watch, AirPods will cost more under Trump’s China tariffs, tech giant warns

Tariffs on an additional $200 billion in Chinese goods would force Apple to raise the cost of some of its most popular products, including the Apple Watch and AirPods, the company warned the federal government.

President Trump can impose the duties at any time, now that a required period to take public input has ended. His administration is also preparing levies on an additional $267 billion in Chinese goods, Trump told reporters on Friday.

In a letter to the U.S. Trade Representative, Apple said the new duties would “result in lower U.S. growth and competitiveness” and higher prices for customers.

“Given the balance of Apple’s economic footprint, the burden of the proposed tariffs will fall much more heavily on the United States than on China,” the Cupertine, Calif.-based company wrote. “Tariffs increase the cost of our U.S. operations, divert our resources, and disadvantage Apple compared to foreign competitors.”

Apple recently topped $1 trillion in market value, the first publicly traded U.S. company to do so.
