Woman guilty of posing as lawyer

Tiffany Weaver is no lawyer. But that little fact didn?t stop the 29-year-old Reisterstown woman from impersonating an attorney reportedly to have sex with an inmate in a Baltimore City prison.

Weaver pleaded guilty Wednesday to identity theft and displaying the government ID of another, but denied allegations from investigators that she engaged in sexual contact with inmate Jason Moody.

“There was never any sexual intercourse,” Weaver?s attorney Ivan Bates told Baltimore City Circuit Judge Althea Handy. “There was no thrusting whatsoever.”

Weaver agreed with that comment in a brief interview after her guilty plea.

“No, there wasn?t,” she said.

Weaver showed prison officers a fake Maryland State Bar Association Security Identification pass with her photo attached to the name of Amanda Sprehn of the Annapolis law firm Hyatt, Peters & Weber on Nov. 13, court records indicate. She also presented jail officials with a business card with Sprehn?s name, according to charging documents.

Weaver visited Moody at Maryland Reception, Diagnostic and Classification Center and, once alone with him in a room for attorney-client visits, was observed by prison officials engaging in sex with Moody, investigators said.

Sprehn said she was surprised to learn of the identity theft from her law firm after prison officials sent her bosses a letter saying she was banned from the facility.

“I was out on maternity leave,” she told The Examiner after Weaver?s arrest. “They informed me they received a letter saying I had been caught having sex with an inmate.”

The experience was especially humiliating for Sprehn because rumors about her having sex with inmates spread throughout the legal community, she said.

“I certainly feel like a victim,” she said. “My reputation is at stake.”

After prison investigators spoke with Sprehn?s law firm, they realized the business card and security pass Weaver presented were fakes, according to charging documents.

Weaver will be sentenced on June 7. Prosecutors are asking for a prison term of six months. Bates is requesting probation.
