Hillary looms large as DNC kicks off

Preventing a message derailment looks like it will be the biggest challenge for Democrats here in Denver.

The party is trying to highlight two stars today.

Ted Kennedy, who is the subject of a lengthy video tribute — though NBC is reporting he is in town and planning to appear in person at the convention — is the opening act, and Michelle Obama is the main attraction. The would-be first lady is going to start her walkthrough at the Pepsi Center in about an hour. Her speech is set to begin at 10:35 Eastern time.

But the hottest ticket in the Mile High city this morning is the breakfast being hosted by Hillary Clinton for her colleagues in the New York delegation.

This comes as Republicans are hitting the local airwaves in heavy rotation with their new spot that highlights female Democrats who are voting for McCain because they don’t feel Barack Obama is “ready to lead.”

And last night on the streets of Denver, staffers with handcarts were moving boxes of the once-ubiquitous blue and red Hillary Clinton for President signs down the street.

The staffers said they were for supporters to wave during Wednesday’s roll call vote.
