Rand Paul says man who threatened to 'chop up' him and his family has been arrested

A man was arrested after threatening to chop up Sen. Rand Paul and his family with an ax, the Kentucky Republican revealed Monday.

“Capitol Police have issued an arrest warrant for a man who threatened to kill me and chop up my family with an axe,” Paul said at an event in Litchfield, Ky., according to the Louisville Courier Journal. “It’s just horrendous that we have to deal with things like this.”

The man allegedly made the threats over the phone with Paul’s Bowling Green office. Paul later tweeted his thanks to the U.S. Capitol Police, the agency responsible for protecting all members of Congress across the country, for arresting the man.

The Courier Journal report said the Capitol Police declined to comment because the investigation is ongoing.

Paul has been through a turbulent year.

Last November Paul suffered broken ribs when he was attacked in a yard dispute with his Kentucky residential neighbor, Rene Boucher, who pleaded guilty to assaulting a member of Congress and recently was sentenced to 30 days in prison. Paul was also present last summer when a gunman opened fire at a congressional baseball practice.

“It’s been a year where we’re becoming more and more aware of these threats,” Paul said, according to the Courier Journal.
