Nevada Supreme Court rejects GOP attempt to limit mail-in vote count in Clark County

Nevada’s highest court shot down a last-ditch effort by Republicans to stop the processing of mail-in ballots on Election Day.

The state’s Supreme Court affirmed a Monday decision by Carson City District Court Judge James Wilson to reject an emergency appeal from President Trump’s campaign to modify Clark County’s processing plan for the ballots. Trump’s team alleged observers did not have full access to monitor the counting process. Las Vegas is the county seat of Clark County.

“Appellants motion, on its face, does not identify any mandatory statutory duty that respondents appear to have ignored,” wrote Justice Kristina Pickering in the order, which was signed by all seven members of the high court. “Further, appellants fail to address the district court’s conclusion that they lack standing to pursue this relief.”

State Republicans and the Trump campaign offered the idea of placing cameras to monitor ballot-counting and having a signature-checking machine. “The Nevada GOP and Trump Campaign are committed to fighting for a free, fair, accountable, and transparent election with this appeal,” the Nevada GOP said in a statement before the state’s Supreme Court decision.

Nevada is a battleground state in Tuesday’s election. Results have not been released, but the RealClearPolitics average gives Democratic nominee Joe Biden a 2.4-point lead ahead of Trump.
