Joe Biden has pulled ahead of President Trump by 13 percentage points nationally, according to the latest tracking poll by Reuters, with more voters growing increasingly unhappy over the White House’s response to the coronavirus and protests in numerous cities.
Currently, 57% of U.S. adults disapprove of Trump’s performance, with 48% of registered voters saying they back Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee, in the general election. Just 35% say the same for Trump.
The poll asked 2,047 Democrats and 1,593 Republicans and was conducted from June 10 to June 16. It has a margin of error of 2 points.
Although 55% of people said they disapproved of Trump’s handling of the coronavirus outbreak, 43% say they still think he would do a better job at steering the economy than Biden, who just 38% say they prefer.
The latest poll is just the latest warning sign for Trump’s reelection chances, which have been dwindling as Biden continues to take the lead in numerous swing states.
A survey of Michigan voters released Tuesday found that Biden was beating Trump by 16 points, with 55% support. Another poll conducted earlier this month in the state found Biden winning by 12 points.
A monthly Gallup tracking poll of Trump’s approval showed a 10-point drop from a high of 49% to 39% last week, its lowest since October. Another CNN poll found Biden’s lead over Trump at an all-time high of 14 points.
The poor polling has increasingly agitated the president. Earlier this month, his reelection campaign sent a cease-and-desist letter to CNN President Jeffrey Zucker, asking the network to retract the poll while questioning its methodology.
“If CNN is genuinely committed to protecting free and fair elections, reporting accurately and truthfully, and polling the genuine pulse of American voters, rather than seeking to harm the Donald J. Trump for President, Inc. campaign, we urge CNN to immediately correct its inaccurate and skewed poll,” the letter read.
