President Trump is fighting with the media and signing controversial executive orders because he has no legislative ideas that he can take action on, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said Sunday.
Pelosi said on ABC that Trump is the “deflector in chief” because he’s trying to get people to not focus on how little he’s actually gotten done during his first four weeks in office. She compared him to President Obama, who had signed a massive stimulus bill into law at the same point during his presidency.
She said Trump ran on having a massive infrastructure bill that would be a top priority but has shown no indication that such a plan exists.
“He has no jobs bill … so he’s gotta talk about the press,” she said. “He has no jobs bill, so he has to talk about transgendered kids in schools. He has no jobs bill so he has to talk about immigrants and banning Muslims from coming to the country.”
Pelosi said she doesn’t think Trump is going to win his main legislative fight at the moment, the repeal and replacement of Obamacare.
Most of the policy ideas regarding that goal have been put out by GOP lawmakers in Congress, and Pelosi said she doubts Trump has an independent plan.
Given what Republicans have put out so far — an analysis provided to state governors showed millions could lose their coverage — there’s no way they’re going to pass a repeal and replace plan, Pelosi said.
“They’ve come up with nothing. They say repeal and replace. That has alliteration but that’s all it has going for it,” she said.
“They won’t be able to do that. They can’t do that. They have alliteration but they don’t have the votes,” pronounced Pelosi.
Democrats aren’t going to work with Republicans on healthcare reform until there’s a plan presented that Democratic lawmakers feel is workable, she said.
“If they come up with something that’s lowering cost, expanding coverage and increasing benefits, then we can talk,” she said. “But, we have seen nothing.”
