‘Welcome to the Shit Show’: Wisconsin lieutenant governor laments primary day

Wisconsin Lieutenant Gov. Mandela Barnes, a Democrat, released a scathing tweet to express frustration at the state conducting Democratic presidential primary and local elections on Tuesday despite the risk of voters and poll workers being exposed to the coronavirus.

“Good morning and welcome to the Shit Show! Today’s episode has been produced by the Supreme Court and directed by the incomparable Speaker and Senate Majority leader duo. Buckle up, this one’s sure to disappoint!” Barnes, 33, who assumed his current office in 2019, said in a tweet on Monday.

More than a dozen states delayed upcoming primary elections due to the coronavirus pandemic, but a nasty partisan battle kept Wisconsin’s April 7 primary in place.

The Republican-controlled state legislature refused to delay the primary, and a U.S. district court ruled last week that the primary could proceed. On Monday, Democratic Gov. Tony Evers attempted to reschedule the primary to June 9 through an executive order, but the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled later in the day that he did not have the authority to do so.

The U.S. Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision along ideological lines, overturned a lower court order that would have extended the deadline for absentee ballots. A provision that prevents official results from being released before April 13 still stands.
