Google Maps goes black for tens of thousands of users

Google Maps appeared to suffer from a partial outage Friday afternoon, with tens of thousands of users reporting that the service was not loading.

The outage took place at about 11:30 a.m. EST, but by about 2:30 p.m., the map service appeared to be back up and running for most users, according to DownDetector, which tracks outages. The cause of the outage is currently unknown.

The crash affected web and app users equally and had over 12,000 reports of outages in the United States and several thousand outages reported in roughly 20 countries, DownDetector noted. The outage appeared to be confined to Google Maps, and there were no reports of widespread outages among other Google services.

A number of third-party apps rely on Google Maps for their services. Flightradar, for example, uses Google Maps to show users flight patterns around the world. When the outage occurred, the company took to Twitter to inform users that the crash would likely affect its service and noted that Google was working to restore the service.
