Poll: Americans back transgender military service

A majority of Americans support allowing transgender individuals to serve in the military, according to a new poll released on Friday.

According to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll, 58 percent of Americans believe transgender people should be allowed to serve, while 27 percent say they should not. Fifteen percent of respondents say they “don’t know.”

When broken down along partisan lines, Democrats are much more on board with the idea. Eighty-three percent say they should be allowed to compared to only 8 percent who say they should not.

Thirty-two percent of Republicans also say they should be allowed to serve. Forty-nine percent, however, say they should be barred from doing so.

The poll comes after President Trump announced Wednesday on Twitter that the U.S. will “not allow or accept” transgender individuals to serve. In the process, he preempted an ongoing review by the Department of Defense.

The poll was taken from June 26-28 and has a 3.2 margin-of-error.
