Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., on Wednesday used a hearing on the possible impeachment of IRS Commissioner John Koskinen to ask several questions about Donald Trump’s refusal to release his tax returns.
Nadler also demanded that Koskinen explain whether frivolous tax-exempt purchases made by Trump’s foundation, exposed by the Washington Post this week, were permitted under the law.
“The particular facts and circumstances would need to be reviewed carefully,” Koskinen said.
Nadler also pressed Koskinen on whether people are able to release their tax returns while being audited. Koskinen said an ongoing audit does not preclude individuals or groups from publishing their tax returns. Trump has defended his decision to withhold his filings by pointing to an audit into his finances.
Republicans held the impeachment hearing Wednesday in lieu of a vote to remove Koskinen thanks to an agreement struck among majority members last week. The impeachment vote has been delayed until after the election.
