State Department Spox Omits U.S. From List of Countries Victimized by ISIS

After news of ISIS’s last atrocity broke over the weekend—this time, the terror group slaughtered some 150 Iraqis, including scores of children, who happened to be out celebrating the end of Ramadan—State Department spokesman John Kirby weighed in on the matter.

“These acts of mass murder are yet another example of Daesh’s contempt for human life,” Kirby said, using another name for ISIS. Kirby then added, “From Baghdad to Istanbul, Brussels, Dhaka, and Paris, Daesh terrorists murder the innocent to attract attention and recruits. They will not succeed.”

Kirby’s list of cities terrorized by ISIS contained two rather odd omissions: Neither Orlando nor San Bernardino, which both suffered terror attacks from ISIS supporters recently, merited a mention. And while some could object that the attacker in Orlando merely pledged his support to ISIS, and wasn’t really connected to the group in a concrete way, that’s also evidently true of the attackers in Dhaka, so that doesn’t really explain the discrepancy.

Kirby did not respond to a request for comment from THE WEEKLY STANDARD.

Update: Kirby has responded to TWS with the following statement:

The list of countries named in our statement was not intended to be inclusive. We are certainly aware of ISIL’s intent to inspire and even conduct attacks on Western and U.S. soil. We grieve with those families and loved ones affected by these attacks. The resiliency shown by our citizens after the attacks in both San Bernardino and Orlando is a testament to the American spirit and an example to the world as we fight violent extremism, wherever it occurs.
