Desert hero?

In a war zone, sometimes soldiers need to make tough, snap decisions.

“Spec Ops: The Line” puts you right in those boots.

Six months before the game starts, giant dust storms begin to ravage Dubai. The leader of “The Damned” 33rd Battalion, Col. John Konrad, leads his troops in to assist with the evacuation. But no one makes it out.

After a radio message from Konrad is discovered, Delta Operative Capt. Martin Walker and his team are tasked with finding out what happened.

You’ll battle through a mash-up of desert wastelands and blown-out skyscrapers as the mission unfolds. Along the way, you’ll have to decide whether it’s more important to save civilians or kill the rogue U.S. soldiers.

“The Line” is a dark, gripping tale that will have you wanting to play it straight through to the end just to find out what happens. It’s pretty simple to do, as game can easily be finished in two sittings. The game is still a must-play, because of the strong story and how it addresses post-traumatic stress disorder.

The top-notch story is paired with an amazing vocal cast (with Nolan North — the voice of Nathan Drake in the “Uncharted” series — playing Walker).

But a great story and impeccable acting can’t be the only things supporting a game. This third-person shooter falls a little flat in the controls department, and the graphics look washed-out — which may be a design choice, but it makes all the characters look like battered Terminators.

Also, the AI is a little hit-and-miss. In some cases, the baddies will run up behind you, shoot you, then wait for you to turn around and return fire. But other times, the AI will try to flank your position with fairly precise movements.

Another flaw is the nearly throwaway multiplayer. There are enough modes to keep players busy, but it just feels like everything moves at a sluggish pace.

“The Line” will force your hand in some questionable situations. And those choices will stick with you, long after shutting off the console.
