Man kills neighbor with crossbow while trying to defend him from dog attack

Authorities say a Massachusetts man accidentally shot and killed his friend with a crossbow in an attempt to save the him from a pit bull attack.

The incident happened Wednesday afternoon at an apartment in Adams, Massachusetts. A neighbor of 27-year-old Joshua Jadusingh said he heard a commotion and Jadusingh calling for help. The unidentified neighbor, who was a friend of the victim, grabbed his crossbow when he realized that Jadusingh was being attacked by two pit bulls.

Berkshire District Attorney Andrea Harrington said the neighbor stood near the bottom of a stairwell and fired at one of the dogs on the landing, but the bolt only hit the pit bull with a glancing blow and traveled through a door, hitting Jadusingh inside a room where he was trying to barricade himself.

One of the dogs belonged to Jadusingh, and the other belonged to his girlfriend, who he lived with. The two pit bulls were known for being violent and were kept in separate cages. Police shot and killed both dogs, which became aggressive toward responding officers.

Harrington said the neighbor was trying to be a “good Samaritan” and no criminal charges were expected. She said the neighbor was “very distraught” over the accidental death.

“The neighbor was reacting in a very stressful circumstance,” Harrington said.
