Rankin math teacher to be recognized by Obama

BRANDON, Miss. (AP) — A Northwest Rankin High School mathematics teacher is heading to Washington, D.C., to be recognized by President Barack Obama as one of the best math teachers in the nation.

The Clarion-Ledger reports (http://on.thec-l.com/MOOG2Y ) that Jennifer Wilson is one of 97 teachers in the nation to win one of the 2012 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. The awards come with a $10,000 prize.

Wilson says she plans to use that money when she returns to graduate school for a doctorate.

The 19-year veteran educator teaches Advanced Placement calculus, geometry, pre-calculus and introduction to engineering. She’s also an author and instructor for Texas Instruments.

She’s known for using technology in her classroom to help make the lessons come alive in a way that’s relevant to students.
