DYRS death toll rises

I reported this morning that Durand Lucas, 17, was at least the third juvenile offender to have been killed this year while under the supervision of D.C.’s Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services.

Turns out Lucas is at least the fourth.

On May 26, DYRS ward Eugene Dixon was shot dead outside a currency exchange at Eastover mall in Prince George’s County.

Dixon’s family buried him today.

By the way, we keep having to say “at least” because the real figure is hidden behind the city’s juvenile privacy laws.

City officials say it’s necessary to protect the kids from harm.
