Hospital CEO says keeping nurses, doctors difficult

The chief executive officer of the healthcare system that operates Prince George’s Hospital Center said keeping doctors and nurses is still a major challenge.

Kenneth E. Glover, the president and CEO of Dimensions Healthcare System, told the Prince George’s County Council on Tuesday that 15 percent of nursing jobs are vacant.  Glover said he would like to see that reduced to 8 percent.

Nursing turnover costs the system, which also owns Laurel Regional Hospital, $40,000-$60,000 for each job, according to documents presented to the council on Tuesday. The documents also state that “physician losses are real and not sustainable” and “negotiations with physicians are aggressive.”

The county ranks higher than Maryland averages for accident and homicide deaths, mental illness and other diseases, according to the documents.
