Senator says Trump is 'deliberately killing people' with rallies that spread COVID, critics remind him of riots and protests in Democratic cities

Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy accused President Trump of “deliberately killing people.”

“Can we take the gloves off and tell the truth? Trump is deliberately killing people. He holds rallies where people get infected. On Thursday, no social distancing or masks, sending a clear message that the CDC should be ignored,” Murphy wrote on Twitter. “His plan is to kill people. Let’s just say it.”

During the final night of the Republican National Convention speech, 1,500 attendees were not socially distancing and few members of the crowd were seen wearing face masks. Murphy accused senior officials in the Trump administration, including Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, of being “stone cold killers” and ascribed responsibility for the next 50,000 coronavirus deaths to them.

“These guys are stone cold killers. The next 50,000 people who die are their responsibility. They sat right next to each other and didn’t wear masks intentionally,” he wrote on Twitter on Friday, accompanied by a photo of Trump leadership. “They knew they were setting an example that would be followed and they reveled in it. STONE. COLD. KILLERS.”

Murphy’s comments were met with condemnation from those on the Right. Former Republican Rep. Nan Hayworth asked the senator to “explain how Democrat-supported riots protect from the virus.”

Media critic Stephen Miller said that Murphy’s standard made Rev. Al Sharpton a “genocidal maniac” for speaking at the March on Washington, an event attended by thousands.

The Libertarian Party of Connecticut called the senator’s statements “bold,” asking if he was planning another “bold” tweet addressing Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont’s decision to send “COVID into nursing homes.”
