Massive brawl at L’Enfant Plaza Metro station leads to injuries, arrests

Three people were taken into custody and four others were injured following a fight that involved some 70 people at the L’Enfant Plaza Metrorail station Friday night.

At about 11 p.m., Metro Transit Police responded to a report of disorderly conduct at the Gallery Place Metrorail Station, spokeswoman Cathy Asato said.

The Gallery Place crowd dispersed but, minutes later, transit police were called to a fight involving roughly 70 people on the Green/Yellow line platform at L’Enfant Plaza. Most of the participants left the area once the police arrived, Asato said.

Metro Transit Police, however, took three people into custody: Angelo Nicholas, 18, for disorderly conduct, and two 16-year-old males, one for simple assault and one for disorderly conduct, Asato said. All three are from the District.

A total of five people were taken from the scene to local hospitals, four of whom suffered injuries related to the fight. One adult had serious injuries while two juveniles and two other adults were transported with minor injuries. The fifth person, who was ill, was also taken to a hospital for treatment.

No weapons were found on the scene. Metro is retrieving video from the station, and Metro Transit Police’s Criminal Investigation Division continues to investigate the incident, Asato said.

There was also a reported shooting at the Anacostia Metrorail station around the same time, but D.C. Fire/EMS spokesman Pete Piringer confirmed that a shooting did not take place there.
