Cuomo denies abandoning dog at governor’s mansion

Outgoing New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office denied a report that said the governor abandoned his pet dog, Captain, at the Executive Mansion during his final days in office.

Richard Azzopardi, a senior adviser and spokesman for the governor, shot back at a report by the Albany Times Union that said Cuomo moved out of the residence last week, citing state police sources who said the governor’s team was asking staff members if they were interested in taking care of the dog.

He insisted the situation surrounding Captain, who was adopted in 2018, was only “temporary” as Cuomo plans to take a vacation after he leaves office at 11:59 p.m. on Monday.

CUOMO RESIGNATION WILL NOT BE DELAYED DUE TO TROPICAL STORM HENRI

“Captain is part of the governor’s family, and for your nameless ill-informed source to imply they’ve been trying to give him away is untrue,” Azzopardi told the Times Union. “Someone offered to watch him for a few days while the transition was ongoing, but for that to be weaponized and morph from a game of telephone into the pages of your paper is absurd — now excuse us, we’re preparing for a major storm,” he added, alluding to Tropical Storm Henri.

The Washington Examiner also contacted the governor‘s office for comment on the story. The representative declined to comment.

Cuomo, a Democrat, announced his resignation on Aug. 10 following the release of New York Attorney General Letitia James’s report outlining 11 allegations of sexual harassment against the governor. Cuomo rejected the claims outlined in the report but said it was the “right thing” to step down. Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul is poised to replace him as New York’s first female governor.
