Most Democrats, liberals want Brian Williams to return to NBC News anchor chair

A CNN poll released Wednesday showed that a slim majority of Americans think embattled NBC News anchor Brian Williams should return to helm the “Nightly News” broadcast.

Of those polled, 52 percent say Williams, who is currently on a sixth-month suspension, should return, while 40 percent say he should not. The remaining 8 percent had no opinion.

Broken down by political party and ideology, liberals and Democrats were more in favor of a Williams return that conservatives and Republicans.

Among Democrats, 58 percent were on Williams side while only 40 percent of Republicans were. In terms of ideology, 60 percent of liberals said Williams should return while 46 percent of conservatives agreed (another 46 percent of conservatives said Williams should not return).

Williams came under fire in early February after he admitted to having claimed falsely that he was aboard a U.S. military aircraft downed by enemy fire in Iraq in 2003. His six-month suspension is unpaid.
