County ends public safety pension cap

The Anne Arundel County Council has removed earnings cap on disability pensions of public safety workers that will allow them to earn more money.

Police officers, firefighters, sheriff?s deputies and prison guards who were retired due to disability were limited to earning the amount of two-thirds of their pensions from a second job, or they would have to pay back the difference.

With the approval of a bill sponsored by County Executive John R. Leopold, those county employees who were disabled on the job can now hold well-paying, full-time jobs and retain their disability benefits.

Representatives from the police, firefighters and sheriff?s deputies unions testified in favor of the bill; only one resident argued against it citing concerns of people working the system.

The bill passed 5-0; Councilmen Josh Cohen, D-District 6, and Edward Middlebrooks, R-District 2, were not present.
