Grassley: Trump would put ‘right type of people’ in Supreme Court

Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley said Wednesday that he believes Donald Trump would nominate the kind of Supreme Court justices he can support.

“Based upon the type of people he’d be looking for, I think I would expect the right type of people to be nominated by him to the Supreme Court,” the Iowa Republican told The Des Moines Register in an interview published Wednesday night.

Grassley cited Trump’s reference to Judge William Pryor on the U.S. Court of Appeals in the 11th Circuit as the type of person he would nominate. Pryor was appointed by former President George W. Bush.

Senate Republicans have said they won’t hold hearings or vote on President Obama’s nominee to the Supreme Court, Merrick Garland, and are hoping a Trump victory will lead to a different nominee. But Grassley admitted on KNIA/KRSL radio in Iowa last week that it’s something of a “gamble” that Trump will defeat Hillary Clinton in the race for the White House.

“It’s a gamble on who’s going to be the next president of the United States,” he said. “I second-guess that. But I guess that’s a point that I’m willing to take.”
