President Trump said Friday that Democrats will take away Americans’ Second Amendment rights if they win seats in the November midterm elections.
“If [Democrats] get in, they will repeal your tax cuts. They will put judges in that you wouldn’t believe. They’ll take away your Second Amendment, which we will never allow to happen. They will take away your Second Amendment. Remember that,” Trump told the audience during a speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference. “They will take away those massive tax cuts, and they will take away your Second Amendment.”
The president then pressed the crowd to choose which they would prefer to have: the tax cuts he said were implemented with the tax bill passed by the GOP-led Congress last year, or the right to bear arms.
“By the way, if you only had a choice of one, which would you rather have, the Second Amendment or tax cuts?” Trump asked the crowd. “I’m going to leave it at the Second Amendment. We’re going to say you want the Second Amendment the most, but we’re going to get them all.”
The president was warning Republican voters not to “get complacent” and decide not to vote in future elections following the success of the GOP in 2016 election, when Republicans regained control of the Senate and won the White House.
“We have a big race coming up in ‘18. You have to get out, you have to just get that enthusiasm. Keep it going,” he said. “See, the word really is complacent. People get complacent. It is a natural instinct. You just won, and now, you’re happy and you’re complacent. Don’t be complacent. OK, don’t be complacent.”
