Wisconsin bar patrons bought dozens of beers for Betty White in case she ever visited

Patrons at a Wisconsin pub are able to prepay for beers for their friends, and until her death last week, the most popular recipient was actress Betty White.

Now, even more beers are being bought in her honor, with the proceeds going to a local animal charity. The town, Mineral Point, has had a long-standing love for White and considers her an honorary local owing to its status as the hometown of her third husband, Allen Ludden, who was buried there in 1981.

“We around town have always thought of Betty as a Pointer by marriage,” said Mike Zupke, owner of the Commerce Street Brewery and hotel, adding, “Betty has 41 beers waiting for her. We decided if people keep buying beers, we will keep taking it and will put the money toward a good animal cause for her.”

The brewery made the act of buying White a beer available through online checkout or donation and even created a beer, “Blonde Betty,” in honor of the late actress. It will continue raising money until the end of January, after which it will donate the money to serve the animals White adored.

White died at the age of 99 on New Year’s Eve, just a couple of weeks shy of what would have been her 100th birthday Jan. 17.

“Allen Ludden and Betty White is our connection to Hollywood,” said Mayor Jason Basting after her death. “For a small town of 2,600 people, it’s pretty neat to have that type of connection. She’s a legend, right?”
