O’Malley budget hikes taxes for one in five Marylanders

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — One out of five Marylanders will pay more in taxes under Gov. Martin O’Malley’s fiscal 2013 budget proposal, O’Malley said Wednesday.

A family of four making at least $150,000 will pay about $191 more annually in state income taxes, O’Malley said.

“I don’t like asking for this — I don’t like doing this,” O’Malley said during a briefing with reporters. “There are many unpleasant aspects of this responsibility but in order to get us through this recession in advance of other states … there are difficult things we need to ask of one another and this is one of them.”

O’Malley said new revenues are needed after relying “pretty exclusively on cuts for the last four years.”

Overall, O’Malley stated, “This is the best budget that we’ve been able to submit in terms of its support and investment in job creation.”
