State Sen. Andy Harris, R-Baltimore-Harford, on Thursday said his campaign to defeat 1st District U.S. Rep. Wayne Gilchrest in the Republican primary has raised $526,000 since it began in May, $352,000 in the past three months.
Harris told reporters it was the largest amount ever raised against the nine-term congressman, whom Harris is challenging from the right over his support of withdrawal in Iraq and Democratic spending plans. “There are other indications that Republican activists are getting interested,” Harris said.
A spokesman for Gilchrest said that fundraising figures would not be available for Gilchrest till the weekend. The latest report must be filed Monday.
The 1st District includes all of the Eastern Shore and parts of Anne Arundel, Baltimore and Harford counties.
