Russia confirms first loss of GRU spy in war with Ukraine

Russia confirmed on Monday it lost an officer from the GRU, the Russian military intelligence agency, in its war with Ukraine.

GRU spy Capt. Alexey Glushchak died in the Ukrainian port of the city Mariupol on Tuesday, Russia said in a statement. The country did not specify how Glushchak died “due to the strict secrecy of the military operation,” according to the Evening Standard.

Glushchak, a father of one, spoke to his mother and wife in Russia on the day he died to congratulate both of them on International Women’s Day. The two women found out about his death later in the day, the statement read. He will be posthumously decorated.

Russia also confirmed the death of two elite paratrooper intelligence officers, Georgy Dudorov and Aleksey Aleshko, in the statement. Moscow has not given any up-to-date numbers of those killed in the war.

A fourth round of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine began on Monday. Officials from both countries have hinted at progress after weekend negotiations, with an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky saying that Russia “is already beginning to talk constructively.”
