Steve Bannon is scheduled next week to headline a fundraising lunch for Black Americans for a Better Future, a conservative group with ties to Republican mega-donor Robert Mercer.
A copy of the invitation bills the event as “A Business Luncheon with Steven K. Bannon.” The Breitbart News executive chairman, a nationalist firebrand, is President Trump’s former chief strategist in the White House and was the CEO of his presidential campaign.
Black Americans for a Better Future, run by Raynard Jackson, received $425,000 in donations from Mercer during the 2016 election cycle. Mercer also has invested in Breitbart News, and is expected to partner with Bannon in the 2018 midterms.
Bannon, who is heading to Alabama to campaign for Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore, is targeting GOP Senate incumbents in primaries, with the goal of draining support for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., when caucus leadership elections are held after the next election. Moore has been accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women, and McConnell, who urged the retired judge to withdraw from the race, has threatened him with expulsion from Congress if he wins.
Mercer is a potential source of funds for any candidate that Bannon recruits.
