Jan. 6 committee postpones Wednesday hearing

The House committee investigating the events that took place on Jan. 6 has reportedly postponed its hearing that was scheduled to take place on Wednesday afternoon, the committee announced Tuesday.

Wednesday’s hearing was set to be the committee’s ninth public hearing and possibly the last before lawmakers release their final report later this year. The postponement was made due to Hurricane Ian, which is expected to make landfall in Florida early Wednesday morning.

“In light of Hurricane Ian bearing down on parts of Florida, we have decided to postpone tomorrow’s proceedings,” Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-MS) and Vice Chairwoman Liz Cheney (R-WY) said in a statement. “We’re praying for the safety of all those in the storm’s path. The Select Committee’s investigation goes forward and we will soon announce a date for the postponed proceedings.”

One of the committee members, Rep. Stephanie Murphy (D-FL), represents a district that is in the path of the hurricane. Murphy represents Florida’s 7th Congressional District, which covers much of the north-central part of the state between Orlando and Daytona Beach.

The hearing was expected to feature “substantial footage” of the Capitol riot and “significant witness testimony” that has not been previously seen, Thompson said last week. It was also set to be the first public hearing since the FBI conducted its raid of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home in August, although it’s unclear whether that search provided any new evidence for the committee’s investigation.

The focus of the hearing was not made clear after the date was set last week, but each of the eight other public meetings over the summer had a specific theme seeking to tie Trump’s actions in the weeks after the election to the Capitol riot. It also hasn’t been decided whether the hearing will feature live testimony, but Thompson said that would be announced “shortly.”

It’s not clear how long the hearing will be postponed or when the panel will reconvene.
