Bloomberg earns first congressional endorsement

Michael Bloomberg has received the endorsement of a Democratic member of Congress, signaling that his primary strategy extends beyond flooding the airwaves with advertisements.

On Monday, the former New York City mayor’s campaign announced that Democratic Rep. Max Rose of New York is backing his bid for the White House.

“The city Mike Bloomberg inherited in 2002 was reeling from the worst terrorist attack in American history and facing economic recession. There were real fears nothing would ever feel or be the same again. Mike Bloomberg took the reins, brought New York City back to life and put us on track to lead in the 21st century,” Rose said in a statement. “Mayor Bloomberg’s even keeled and visionary leadership is what we need to reduce the chaos, partisanship and hyper-vitriol that has overtaken Washington. Rather than submit to another stage of politics as usual, we must be bold and unifying in taking on the huge challenges we face as a nation.”

Rose, an Afghanistan War veteran, is the first congressman to throw his support behind Bloomberg.

Bloomberg’s campaign strategy ignores the early primary contests of Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, and South Carolina and instead banks on an impressive showing in the Super Tuesday states of California and Texas. Although he has been in the race for less than two months, he has spent more than $200 million on advertising. Recently, his campaign announced a $10 million Super Bowl ad purchase and has promised to spend $1 billion on supporting any Democrat who wins the party’s nomination.

Despite his unprecedented spending, Bloomberg is at 5.8% support nationally, according to the latest RealClearPolitics average.
