Democratic super PAC runs ad slamming House Republicans on ‘Trumpcare’

A Democratic super PAC released an ad Monday aimed at House Republicans for their intent to gut portions of Obamacare, arguing: “Trumpcare is very unpopular.”

The digital ad, produced by American Bridge 21st Century Foundation and titled “Trumpcare 2.0: Another Disaster,” accuses Republicans of wanting to undo the federal healthcare law in order to benefit wealthy Americans.

“Not surprisingly, Trumpcare is very unpopular,” the ad’s narrator says. “So why are Republicans fighting for it? Because people who earn over $1 million a year would get tax cuts totaling $144 billion. Tell your member of Congress. Don’t tell Donald Trump sell you out.”

House Republicans have returned home for a two-week recess, during which many of them will face questions about healthcare from their constituents. According to Axios, the ad on Obamacare repeal will target Reps. Luke Messer and Todd Rokita from Indiana; Ann Wagner from Missouri; Lou Barletta, Tom Marino and Mike Kelly of Pennsylvania; Barbara Comstock of Virginia; and Will Hurd of Texas.

House Republicans failed last month to pass a bill aimed at repealing parts of Obamacare because they could not agree on details of the legislation, called the American Health Care Act. Conservative members from the House Freedom Caucus have said the bill doesn’t go far enough in repealing the law and in lowering premiums, while centrists are concerned about a projection about the bill, from the Congressional Budget Office, showing that 24 million more people will be uninsured by 2026 if the bill becomes law.

The American Health Care Act was pulled from the House floor before a vote on March 24, though negotiations between the White House and representatives continued days later. Thursday a House committee voted to add an amendment to the bill that provides funding to offset premiums driven by high-cost enrollees.

American Bridge is targeting Republicans for resuscitating the bill. The group behind the ad was founded by David Brock, a former conservative journalist who now leads liberal nonprofits and is an ally to Hillary Clinton.

The group describes itself as an organization “committed to holding Republicans accountable for their words and actions and helping you ascertain when Republican candidates are pretending to be something they’re not.” According to the Center for Responsive Politics, American Bridge spent $19.7 million during the 2016 election cycle.

This story has been updated to clarify that the ad is part of a digital — and not a television — ad buy.
