U.S.-backed forces in Syria detained several Islamic State fighters linked to a January suicide bombing that killed four Americans.
The bombing was the deadliest attack on Americans in Syria.
It killed Army Chief Warrant Officer 2 Jonathan Farmer, Navy Chief Cryptologic Technician Shannon Kent, and the Defense Intelligence Agency’s Scott Wirtz. A naturalized U.S. citizen working as an interpreter for a U.S. contractor, Ghadir Taher, was also killed.
An official told CNN up to five ISIS fighters involved in the planning and execution of the bombing were captured by the Syrian Democratic Forces. The U.S. has also questioned the fighters.
The attack took place weeks after President Trump announced his decision to withdraw all U.S. troops from Syria, declaring that the terrorist group had been defeated in the country.
Trump walked back the withdrawal in February, permitting a small U.S. presence to remain in Syria to keep pressure on ISIS.
