Police officials said there are multiple suspects, and one person was arrested Monday morning.
Dandre Martin, 26, was booked on charges of assault with a firearm and being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm, said Police Chief Kathy Lester.
“The scale of violence that just happened in our city is unprecedented in my 27 years here at the Sacramento Police Department,” Lester said at a news conference Sunday.
Lester said it is not yet clear what Martin’s role may have been in the shooting. Sacramento police detectives also delivered three search warrants to houses in the area, and one handgun was recovered.
A large fight broke out just before the shooting, Lester said at the press conference. Lester added that local police collected hundreds of pieces of evidence from the crime scene, including a stolen handgun.
The shooting occurred in a highly populated nightclub scene, about one mile from the basketball stadium where the Sacramento Kings played against the Golden State Warriors Sunday night. Both teams observed a moment of silence for the victims prior to the start of the game, CNN reported.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom released a statement on the shooting, calling gun violence a “scourge” and crisis in the country.
“Sadly, we once again mourn the lives lost and for those injured in yet another horrendous act of gun violence. Jennifer and I send our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and to the wider community impacted by this terrible tragedy,” Newsom said. “The scourge of gun violence continues to be a crisis in our country, and we must resolve to bring an end to this carnage.”
President Joe Biden also condemned the shooting and called for action from Congress on gun violence.
“Today, America once again mourns for another community devastated by gun violence,” Biden said. “A single act in Sacramento, six individuals left dead and at least a dozen more injured. Families forever changed. Survivors left to heal wounds both visible and invisible.”
