Democratic Senate candidate Katie McGinty’s campaign Wednesday denounced recent comments from former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, in which he said that Donald Trump would do poorly with suburban Philadelphia women as more are “ugly” than they are “attractive.”
In a statement provided to the Washington Examiner, a spokesperson for the campaign spoke out against Rendell, who serves as McGinty’s campaign chairman, with McGinty having served as the head of the Department of Environmental Protection during Rendell’s gubernatorial tenure
“Governor Rendell’s comments were completely off-base and inappropriate,” said Sabrina Singh, a spokesperson for the campaign.
Rendell’s made the comment to the Washington Post in a piece discussing Trump’s peeling off of votes from Democrats in the Philadelphia suburbs, which many consider to be the key battleground area in the state.
“For every one he’ll lose 1½ , two Republican women,” Rendell told the Washington Post’s Dave Weigel. “Trump’s comments like ‘You can’t be a 10 if you’re flat-chested,’ that’ll come back to haunt him. There are probably more ugly women in America than attractive women. People take that stuff personally.”
While Trump won the state’s primary by 35 percentage points over Sen. Ted Cruz, Trump also performed well in the Philadelphia “collar” counties (Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery), topping Ohio Gov. John Kasich by more than 80,000 votes in the region.
McGinty is currently readying for a general election battle with GOP Sen. Pat Toomey after topping former Rep. Joe Sestak and Braddock Mayor John Fetterman in the state’s April 26 primary. Democrats are targeting Toomey’s seat as a possible pick-up opportunity as they look to retake the Senate majority.
Toomey currently leads McGinty by seven points, according to the latest RealClearPolitics average, although the race has tightened since McGinty won the primary.
The Toomey campaign declined to comment on Rendell’s remarks.
