Gangs, home energy, on tap for Montgomery council

Montgomery County Council members on Thursday will review efforts by police to crack down on gang activity.

Police say gang crimes have decreased countywide in recent years but point to spikes in so-called pack attacks, street robberies on unsuspecting victims by multiple, often violent, people. In the first quarter of the year, 54 gang-related incidents have been reported.

They also will discuss implementation of the county’s Home Energy Loan Program, which offers low-interest loans to homeowners for making their residences more energy efficient.

The council approved the program last year, but funding wasn’t available at the time. Federal stimulus money is being used to start the green-friendly effort.
