Russian forces have taken the mayor of Ukrainian city Melitopol into custody, according to Deputy Head of the Office of the President Kyrylo Tymoshenko.
“According to preliminary information, the mayor of the city of Melitopol, Ivan Fyodorov, was abducted an hour ago by the invaders,” Tymoshenko said, per Interfax Ukraine.
Footage of Fyodorov being dragged away outside of a government building by members of the Russian military was released on CNN, according to a report.

“A group of 10 occupiers kidnapped the mayor of #Melitopol (Zaporizhzhya region) Ivan Fedorov. He refused to cooperate with the enemy. #StopRussia #StopPutin,” a tweet from the Ukrainian Parliament read.

Fyodorov’s capture was also confirmed by Adviser to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Anton Gerashchenko.
In “Melitopol, a group of invaders of 10 people abducted the mayor of the city, Ivan Fedorov, who refused to cooperate with the enemy,” Gerashchenko said. “During the abduction, they put a plastic bag over his head. The enemy detained him in the city crisis center, where he dealt with the life support of the Ukrainian city. There was a Ukrainian flag in Ivan Fedorov’s office.”

Melitopol sits in the Zaporizhzhia region of Ukraine and has been under Russian occupation for over a week, according to a report.
