Pelosi snaps at leadership question: ‘I’m not talking about that’

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) isn’t interested in talking about maintaining her leadership position as Democrats face the prospect of a rough midterm election cycle.

Instead, she placed emphasis on “getting out the vote” when Margaret Brennan, host of CBS News’s Face the Nation, asked Pelosi several questions about the Republicans being projected to take control of the House and generational change in leadership.

When Brennan asked her whether she will remain in leadership in the new Congress, Pelosi said, “I’m not talking about that.”

“I’m here to talk about how we win the election,” she added. “I’m not here to talk about me, I’m here to talk about the future of America’s working families, for the children.”

Pelosi has served as speaker of the House from 2007 to 2011 and then again from 2019 to the present. If Republicans do win control of the lower chamber in November, Pelosi would be positioned to return to the role of House minority leader, though there is a push now for “new blood” to rise up in the party.

Pelosi, who is 82, said seniors, women of childbearing age, and those who care about the planet have “a lot at risk.” Pelosi said she is pleased so far with the Democrats’ ground game as early voting gets underway.

“Now, we’re down to the stretch,” she said. “And we’re down to very close elections. We feel very confident … I see very clearly that the ownership of the ground is with us. It’s about getting out the vote.”

She echoed Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) in stating that Republicans have “no plan” to bring down the cost of living or prescription drugs — something Pelosi said Democratic leaders are working hard to tackle and have legislation to show for it.

“The fight is not about inflation — it’s about the cost of living,” she said. “And if you look at what we have done, to bring down the cost of prescription drugs, to bring down the cost of energy and the rest in our legislation, you will see that it has been opposed every step of the way by the Republicans.”
