Truant Metro Board members did public a favor
Re: Metro Board members missed more than meetings,” editorial, Aug. 4
The Examiner should lighten up on the Metro Board and recognize the fact that those missing members are actually doing the right thing.
Members of the board are living examples of the Peter Principle, which basically states that an individual will rise to his or her own level of incompetence. You should realize that they are simply not capable of dealing with the issues. Missing board meetings is sort of like that “better to keep your mouth shut and be thought of as stupid than to open your mouth and eliminate all doubt” thing.
Give them credit for being aware of their own incompetence. Now let’s get rid of them.

No excuse for mishandling of soldiers’ remains
Re: “Estimate of Arlington grave mix-ups grows to 6,600,” July 29
It is a tragedy and a travesty that the remains of American soldiers have been misplaced or lost at, of all places, Arlington National Cemetery. More than 6,600 graves have been misidentified and some war heroes’ cremated remains have been dumped in trash bins or found in garbage dumps.
There is absolutely no excuse for what a duo of incompetents have done to hurt so many families and friends of soldiers who were not given their rightful place to rest. If the so-called cemetery superintendents had just kept a 5 x 7 card file in a shoebox with the names, date of burial, and the location of the graves, all of the heartache that their irresponsible behavior has caused to so many would not have happened.
The investigation should continue and if warranted, criminal charges should be filed and the guilty prosecuted and punished. And all those incorrectly buried should be interred again with full military honors.

There is such a thing as free news
There might not be such a thing as a free lunch, but I’m sure glad there is a free newspaper, The Examiner. You compete admirably with the major papers in town with your sports, commentary, local news and investigative reporting.
You put the meaning back into the word “journalist” and I am grateful. You also give me renewed hope for our republic’s best defense — an informed public.
