President Trump condemned a recent chemical attack on Syrian civilians that left dozens dead, calling the use of chemical weapons “unspeakable” on Wednesday before a private meeting with King Abdullah of Jordan.
“It was a terrible affront to humanity,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday. First lady Melania Trump and Queen Rania Al-Abdullah of Jordan were also present.
“These are very troubled times in the Middle East,” Trump said, citing the chemical attack as a “horrible, horrible thing.”
The government of Bashar Assad is suspected of perpetrating the chemical attack. Critics of the Trump administration’s policy toward Syria have demanded the U.S. take action in response to rising violence from the Assad regime, but the White House has signaled that the U.S. no longer believes regime change is a realistic option in Syria.
“We’re going to have some very interesting discussions today,” Trump said of his meeting with the Jordanian leader.
