Zelensky says he’s ‘not hiding’ in video from Kyiv office

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wants his people to know he is not running away from the fight 12 days into Russia’s invasion of his country.

In a video posted Monday night local time, Zelensky appears in his office in the capital city. “Everyone is where they should be. I am in Kyiv,” he said.

“I’m not hiding, and I’m not afraid of anyone — as much as it takes to win this patriotic war of ours,” Zelensky added, according to a transcript.

The video opens with a glimpse of the view from his building before Zelensky walks into his office.

“Almost three years ago, as soon as the election took place, we entered this building, this office,” Zelensky said, “together, with the government and parliament, to unload the center of Kyiv and in general — to move to a modern, transparent office — as befits a progressive democratic European country. Now, I will say one thing: I stay here.”

Zelensky’s exact whereabouts are unknown, with the only indication coming from a brief video posted outside with other members of the Ukrainian government shortly after Russia’s invasion began. Reports indicated that Zelensky was in a bunker in a secret location as Russian forces advanced toward Kyiv.

Zelensky has maintained that he will stay in the country’s capital despite threats against his life.
