WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. government is offering rewards of up to $45 million for information on the whereabouts of eight senior leaders of the Yemen-based al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula organization.
The State Department said Tuesday that its Rewards for Justice program would give up to $10 million for the location of AQAP’s top official and up to $5 million for seven of his deputies. AQAP has launched numerous attacks against U.S. and other foreign interests in Yemen as well as Yemeni targets.
The group has also plotted attacks against the United States at home, including the 2009 underwear bomb attempt to blow up a commercial airliner over the U.S.
