MontCo works with federal agencies like ICE
Re: “MontCo welcomes illegals, as neighbors crack down,” April 2
This article on immigration describing Montgomery County’s policy on immigration issues was not accurate, notwithstanding the fact that the county supplied full information to your reporter.
Montgomery County provides the names of any and all persons arrested for crimes of violence or certain firearms-related offenses to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. No distinction by name, race, whatever – everyone.
When they stop someone, county police also consult their in-car computer to see if that person is listed on the National Crime Information Center database. If so — be it for a child support rap in another state or an ICE detainer — they are detained and the proper authorities are contacted. In addition, our Department of Corrections’ long-standing practice is to fax ICE a computer list of foreign-born inmates in custody every Monday.
Our relationship with ICE and all other federal law enforcement agencies remains strong. We continue to provide assistance to them on a daily basis with regard to criminal activity occurring in Montgomery County, including recent work with federal authorities on a major operation designed to dismantle the infrastructure of a major gang operating in the D.C. metro area.
What Montgomery County does not do is spend scarce local police resources doing the work of federal immigration police through the 287(g) program.

Obama didn’t answer racial question honestly
Re: “Census results can be tracked online,” March 24
It’s every American’s responsibility to reply to the census. The day after getting the census form, I filled it out and answered all the questions honestly.
My wife is 10 percent Native American and 90 percent Caucasian, so I checked both on the census form. I watched President Obama on TV a few days ago and heard him talk about how important it was to fill it out correctly. Now I hear that he only checked black/African American on the census form.
I thought he was also half Caucasian. If not, what ethnicity was his mother? And what does this say about the president?
