Youngkin to headline Michigan GOP convention

Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) will give the keynote address during the Republican convention in Lansing, Michigan, later this month in support of GOP gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon.

The event, which is set to take place Aug. 27, will be the second GOP convention that the governor has headlined after he gave the keynote address in Nebraska last month. Youngkin also joined Republican hopeful Heidi Ganahl on the campaign trail for her bid for Colorado governor.

BACKING TRUMP IMPEACHMENT MOSTLY HAZARDOUS TO HOUSE REPUBLICANS’ POLITICAL HEALTH

“What we’re seeing in Michigan is similar to what we saw in Virginia last summer — voters coming together demanding better education, safer communities, and manageable cost of living for their families,” Youngkin said in a statement to the Washington Examiner. “I’m excited to campaign with Tudor Dixon later this month and look forward to bringing the Virginia spirit to Michigan!”

The expansion of Youngkin’s national portfolio has fueled speculation that the governor is eyeing a presidential run in 2024.

“The governor has said he is excited to help other Republican candidates for governor, especially those running to flip blue states red, just as he did in Virginia last year,” Kristin Davison, a political adviser to Youngkin, told the Washington Examiner.

The speech in Lansing is expected to focus on education, according to the Hill, which was a hot-button topic for the Virginia gubernatorial race when Youngkin beat out former Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe last year. “Gov. Youngkin’s victory in Virginia demonstrated the political power of parents who want to be involved in ensuring their children get a great education,” Dixon said in a statement.

Dixon received the endorsement of former President Donald Trump and secured the party’s nomination for governor on Aug. 2. Dixon will face incumbent Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) during November’s midterm elections.
