Trump approval rating slips 6 points as Americans fear a recession

President Trump’s approval rating has slid 6 points as Americans grow increasingly worried about the future of the U.S. economy.

The approval rating dipped to 38%, according to an ABC News/Washington Post poll released Tuesday. The new rating is a point off Trump’s average and down from his career high of 44% in July.

The slip closely mirrors a dip in Americans’ confidence in Trump’s handling of the economy. Americans’ approval of Trump’s economic policy fell 5 points from 51% to 46%.

The drop may be connected to the ongoing trade war between the United States and China. Six in 10 Americans are concerned about the trade war’s impact on prices. The same number of Americans believe a recession is likely to hit the U.S. within the next year.

Over 40% of Americans think Trump’s trade policies make the chance of a recession more likely, while 16% believe that Trump’s trade tactics are reducing the chance that the U.S. economy slides.
