Feds Investigating Clinton Pal McAuliffe

Virginia governor Terry McAuliffe has been under investigation by federal authorities for at least a year. According to to CNN, which first reported the story, the FBI and Department of Justice are investigating whether some donations to the Democrat’s 2013 campaign, particularly from Chinese businessman Wang Wenliang, were illegal.

The feds are also reportedly looking into McAuliffe’s time as a board member of the Clinton Global Initiative, as well as Wang’s role as a Clinton Foundation donor.

Watch here:

McAuliffe has been a longtime associate of the Clintons, including serving as chairman of the Democratic party at the end of Bill Clinton’s White House tenure. On Sunday, McAuliffe held a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, with tickets selling for between $500 and $2,700.

But that’s not McAuliffe’s only connection to a 2016 presidential candidate. Back in 2009, when McAuliffe ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination for governor, his campaign took a healthy donation from likely Republican nominee Donald Trump.

In 2013, Republican Ken Cuccinelli, McAuliffe’s opponent in the gubernatorial race, found reason to doubt McAuliffe’s integrity—and another reason to try to keep him out of office—in McAuliffe’s own book:

Taped on the dashboard in front of Cuccinelli’s seat is a piece of paper with another quotation from McAuliffe’s book. “Now let me tell you, it’s a lot easier to raise money for a governor,” McAuliffe wrote on page 77. “They have all kinds of business to hand out, road contracts, construction jobs, you name it.” Cuccinelli says he has the line there to remind him what kind of man he’s running against—the type who sees government and politics as a way to “hand out” business and favors. He shakes his head at the idea. “I think [it] begs the question of, what’s he doing in the race?” Cuccinelli says. “Why is he here?” He stares out the window as we pass through the Northern Virginia suburbs.
